Students of a government primary school in Birganj upazila locked their classrooms yesterday as no teacher came to take classes for consecutive seven days ahead of their primary terminal examinations. Locals said 134 students had been studying at Rasulpur Government Primary School in Rasulpur village of Mohmmadpur union. Established in 1936, the school has five posts of teachers including headmaster and assistant headmaster. Of them, two posts remained vacant for long. However, none of the three other teachers came to take classes at the school since October 23, locals and students said. Jyotika Shill, a Class V student of the school told this correspondent that Ahsan Habib Labu, headmaster of the school was transferred in August this year. Aparna Sen, another teacher is on maternity leave, he said. Meanwhile, Momotaz Parvin, assistant headmistress of the school also got transferred on October 23 last. Upazila education office stopped her transfer order as she was the lone teacher of the school. But ignoring the decision of upazila education office, Momotaz mysteriously remained absent since October 23, just a month ahead of primary terminal examinations scheduled to be held on November 23. Monoranjan Roy, a Class Four student of the school alleged that they came to school and returned home without attending classes since October 23 for absence of teachers. Protesting the absence of teachers, the students of the school locked all the doors of the school yesterday morning. Despite several attempts over cell phone, Md Tazul Islam Mondal, upazila education officer of Birganj could not be contacted for his views. Md Zahidul Islam, UNO of Birganj said he was unaware about the matter. However, he promised to take prompt action in this regard.
