Sylhet case for killing 6 finally goes to DB

Two cases filed with Companiganj police station for killing six villagers at Parkul in the upazila on October 4 were finally shifted to the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Thursday. Six people were killed and at least 100 others were injured as the villagers of Kalaruka under Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj district and Parkul of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet district locked in a fierce clash over fishing in the Surma River. Following the incident, the feuding groups filed two separate cases with Companiganj police station on October 9. As many as 71 people from both sides have been made accused in the cases. Of the accused, police arrested one, 57 got bail from the High Court and the rest are still at large. Nurul Islam, a member of Kalaruka Union Parishad (UP), filed a murder case as his nephew Yusuf Ali was one of the six killed in the clash while Indrajit Das of Parkul village filed a counter case. Seeing no development in the investigation into the murder case, complainant Nurul Islam submitted a petition to the Superintendent of police, Sylhet, with an appeal to transfer the case to the Detective Branch of police. Police Superintendent Md Shakhawat Hossain said both the cases have been sent to Detective Branch for proper investigation into the incident. Speaking at a condolence meeting at Haji Kamor Ali High School ground at Parkul on October 14, Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, deputy inspector general of police, Sylhet Range, assured the villagers that the killers would be arrested immediately. A senior police officer has been assigned to investigate the murder case, the DIG told the villagers in presence of the ruling party lawmaker Muhibur Rahman Manik.
