Rangpur interns on strike
Interns at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Monday night went on work abstention demanding safety and security.
The work stoppage was enforced as a group of outsiders assaulted Dr Al Mamun, an intern of the hospital, on Saturday.
The interns demanded arrest and punishment of the culprits and setting up of a temporary police camp inside the hospital.
They held a meeting with Dr Toufiqul Islam, director of the hospital yesterday morning. The director requested them to withdraw the strike but to no effect.
The interns said they will continue the strike till their demands are met.
Dr Sanjoy Kumar Roy, general secretary of Intern Doctors Association of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital said, a number of outsiders led by HM Morshed, son of Dr Delwar Hossain of Munshipara assaulted Al Mamun after he discharged a patient from surgical unit of the hospital.
According to Sanjoy, Morshed wanted to keep the patient at the hospital for two weeks more.
Dr MA Kaium, in-charge of surgical unit told this correspondent that the patient was cured and so he was released.
Morshed and his men attacked Dr Mamun as they did not find me at the ward, he added.
Asked, Dr Kaium said, “Morshed actually forced them to keep the patient at the hospital to get a certificate of grievous injury. For this certificate a patient needs to stay at hospital for at least 21 days.”
Meanwhile, the sufferings of patients at the hospital mounted as the intern doctors did not come to serve them, hospital sources said.
