The accused in the case are Amar Kisku, 19, and Johan Marandi, 30, Andrias Murmu, 28, and Shawkat Iqbal, 30. They were charged for gang-rape and murder and also for illegally entering the house of Moriam and looting her properties, said sub-inspector Nuruzzaman of Godagari police station, also investigation officer (IO) in the case. Charges against Moriam's brother-in-law Biswanath Marandi was dropped as his involvement in the incident could not be substantiated. Moriam's son Wilson Murmu filed a murder case after police recovered the victim's body that was hanging from a tree at Shimla Dighipara village on July 10. According to the charges, Andrias Murmu 'hired' the three others for stealing at the house of Moriam. Police said, Andrias had enmity with Moriam over a piece of land and he wanted to financially cripple her through stealing her all belongings. The charges further said, that the criminals gang-raped Moriam and later strangled her. Afterwards they hanged her body from a tree in a bid to show it as a case of suicide. Police said, the victim's post-mortem report and other evidences support the allegations. Forty-eight-year-old Moriam was a teacher at an adult education school at the village.
