Students of animal husbandry and veterinary science department of Rajshahi University (RU) continued class boycott programme for the sixth day yesterday protesting opening of a new department namely animal husbandry science department at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU). They also staged a sit-in on the campus for two hours from 11:00am demanding immediate closure of the newly launched department at PSTU. Over 100 students participated in the programme and vowed to continue class boycott programme until the demand was met. Although Patuakhali Science and Technology University has animal husbandry and veterinary science department, the vice-chancellor of the university has unnecessarily opened the department, the agitating RU students said, adding that It will create a problem for them in the job market. They urged the government and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take steps to shut the department at PSTU. Students of animal husbandry and veterinary science department of PSTU have also been agitating protesting opening of the department since July 31, some students claimed. Expressing solidarity with the students of PSTU, the students of the same department at Haji Danesh Science and Technology University, Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) and Sylhet Agriculture University have been agitating since September this year, they said. RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take immediate steps to resolve the issue. Prof Mohammad Jalal Uddin Sarder, chairman of animal husbandry and veterinary science department of RU, has expressed his solidarity with the demand of PSTU students. He urged the government and the UGC to stop functioning of the newly created animal husbandry department at PSTU.
