6 Bagerhat policemen sued

Six policemen of Bagerhat Sadar model police station have been sued on charge of extortion and physically torturing a man of Khardar area in Bagerhat town. Monirul Islam Liton, son of Shamsu Sheikh, filed a petition case on Wednesday afternoon with the court of chief judicial magistrate, Bagerhat, accusing the six policemen of torturing him for refusing to pay bribe money. The accused are sub inspectors Harun-ar-Rashid, Bisharul Islam, Shahidul Islam and Hedayetul Islam and constables Asad and Abdul Alim. Chief Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Abu Taher of Bagerhat court recorded statement of the complainant. Later, he sent Monirul Islam Liton and Asad Mia to Bagerhat district jail as they were shown arrested in a case for motorbike lifting. The complainant stated in his petition case that the accused while on routine patrol duty picked him and his relative Asad Mia from in front of Zaheda Hotel in Bagerhat Sadar at about 3:00 pm on Tuesday. The accused took away Tk 60,000 from me and my relative Asad Mia threatening to kill us in crossfire if we try to raise any hue and cry, the complainant said. Later at 6:30 p m on the same day (Tuesday), the accused took us to police station. At about 9:00 pm, SI Harun-ar-Rashid demanded more Tk 50,000 for letting me and my relative off from the police station, he said. SI Harun-ar-Rashid also abused my wife Mina Begum as she paid Tk 25,000 instead of Tk 50,000 as demanded, the complainant stated in his petition case. At about 11:00 pm on the same day (Tuesday), all the six accused brutally tortured us branding as listed criminals and motorbike lifters. We sustained severe injuries due to beating right and left with sticks, he added in the case. On Wednesday afternoon, police sent us to court in false case of motorbike lifting, he further said. The chief judicial magistrate yesterday ordered a judicial inquiry into the allegation of complainant Monirul Islam Liton. Magistrate Rafia Islam of the court of chief judicial magistrate has been asked to conduct the judicial inquiry and submit a report on findings by the first week of next month. OC Moazzem Hossain of Bagerhat Sadar police station said stern action would be taken against the accused if they are found guilty.
