Dyke collapse in Khulna renders 1,000 families homeless
Collapse of Arhua-Madhabpur dyke of the Atrai River has rendered over a thousand families of five villages homeless in Digholia upazila of the district.
The incident occurred early Friday when most of the people of those villages were asleep.
The inundated villages are Kamargati, Madhabpur, Ambaria, Radha Madhabpur and Arhua.
Around 60 to 70 percent kutcha houses in the villages have been damaged forcing the affected families to take shelter on high land locals and officials said.
Over 200 shrimp enclosures and about a hundred ponds of the five affected villages have also been washed away, they said.
Chairman of Barakpur union Gazi Zakir Hossain told this correspondent that the dyke collapsed failing to thwart furious tides of the Atrai River.
Thousands have become homeless in Barakpur union, but none from Khulna district administration came up till 2:00 pm yesterday to stand by the side of the hapless people, he said.
Contacted, Digholia UNO Oziar Rahman said he was taking all-out steps to mitigate sufferings of the affected people.
