UP member abducted in Hatiya

Pirates abducted a union parishad member in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali early yesterday. The victim, Abdul Khaleque, 55, is a member of Chanandi Union parishad. Police quoted family members as saying that Khaleque took Sehir at his house at Adarsha Gram and was waiting for Azan to offer Fazr prayers. A gang of 15 to 20 armed pirates led by notorious Nizam Dakat's accomplices Pichchi Jahangir and Jasim stormed into the Khaleque's house and abducted him. Hearing screams of the family members, locals and police from Janata Bazar police camp rushed to the scene and chased the pirates. The gang opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. Police fired six rounds of bullets, but could not arrest any of the gang and rescued the victim. The pirates fled away in a trawler. Sub-Inspector Moazzem Hossain, in-charge of Janata Bazar police camp, said none was injured during exchange of fire between the pirates and police.
