Although corporal punishment is banned, a teacher beats up 13 of class III mercilessly just for refusing to work at his garden

Authorities yesterday suspended a teacher of Shitlai Primary School at Boro Shitlai village in Birganj upazila for a month on charge of mercilessly beating up 13 students of Class III for their disobeying the order to work at his garden on July 30. Eleven of the 13 victim students took first aid at Birganj upazila health complex on Saturday evening and they spent the night at the health complex, said Dr Abdullahel Baki, resident medical officer of the health complex. The 11 students are Shiuli Akter, 9, daughter of Md Siddique, Tumpa Rani, 10, daughter of Raj Kumar, Nayan Roy, 10, son of Hemanta Roy, Raihan, 9, son of Md Shariful Islam, Romoni Roy, 10, daughter of Gourango Roy, Md Robiul Islam, 10, son of Nazim Uddin, Ripan, 9, son of Md Mazid, Diba Rani Roy, 9, daughter of Raj Kumar, Munni Arju, 10, daughter of Muhibul Islam all of Boro Shitlai village and Shilpi Roy, 10, daughter of Surjo Roy of Bhabki village in Birganj upazila. The accused teacher, Md Humayun Kabir of Shitlai Primary School has been suspended for a month, said Md Zillur Rahman, headmaster of Shitlai Primary School, referring to the order of Birganj Upazila Education Officer Tazul Islam Mondal. Parents of the victim students said Humayun Kabir on Thursday asked the students to work at his garden on Friday but the students did not go there for work. Angered by the incident, the teacher found out the 'disobedient' students at their classroom and started beating them with a stick although corporal punishment to students at educational institutions is banned according to a circular of the education ministry, they said. The aggrieved parents also said that Headmaster Md Zillur Rahman did not take any step in this regard. The parents of the victim students on Sunday submitted complaints at different offices in the upazila regarding the incident. "The accused teacher was suspended today morning. Investigation is going on," Birganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Zahidul Islam said yesterday. Asked by this correspondent, accused teacher Humayun Kabir denied his involvement with the incident.
