Students of animal husbandry (AH) faculty at Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) in Mymensingh yesterday confined the registrar, agriculture faculty dean and about 150 staffs to their office rooms for three hours demanding reversal of a recent University Grants Commission (UGC) decision on the degree under AH faculty. Sources said, AH faculty students brought out a procession and gathered in front of the administration building at around 11:30am. Later, they locked the administration building at around 12:00pm. At that time, registrar Md Nozibur Rahman, dean of the agriculture faculty Prof Md Abdul Khaleq Patwary and 150 staffs were inside the building. The agitated students said they were holding peaceful protest rally, sit-in and class boycott programme but the authorities concerned did not pay heed to their demand. Nazmul Huda, a leader of AH students said that they will not go back to classes until and unless the UGC withdraws its 'illogical' decision in black and white. The students withdrew their siege at 3:00pm following assurances by BAU authorities to look into their demand. The AH faculty students started boycotting classes from 29 July protesting a University Grants Commission decision terming B Sc (Hons.) in Animal Husbandry 'ineffective' and 'unnecessary' in the present context of the country. It requested the registrars of all public and private universities through a letter on 17 July not to enroll students under the course in future. Sources said, the students of AH and veterinary faculties were demanding reversal of the decision to merge the two faculties.
