Attack on May Day Function

Sylhet transport workers call strike May 22

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Sylhet district road transport workers union yesterday called a daylong strike in the Sylhet division on May 22. The strike has been called to protest police failure to arrest the culprits who attacked the May Day's cultural function organised by the union. Calling the strike at a press conference at Sylhet press club, the union leaders alleged that about 150 madrassa students attacked their cultural function in the city's court point area at midnight. Twenty people including their union president Abu Sarker sustained injuries in the attack. We went to file a case accusing 150 people in this connection, but the police did not record the case, the leaders alleged. City mayor Badar Union Ahmed Kamran and lawmaker Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury assured us of taking measures against the attackers, but to no effect, the leaders said. If measures are not taken immediately, we will enforce the strike in the division on the 22 May, the leaders warned. Union president Abu Sarker and others were present at the press conference.
