5 BCL activists expelled for Monday's vandalism

Nilphamari Government College authorities yesterday expelled five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) from the college on charge of vandalising the venue of a function arranged on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Poet Rabindranath Tagore on the campus on Monday. The authorities took the decision in an emergency meeting with Principal Laila Arjumand Banu in the char. The expellees are Satyendranath Roy, Ratan, Khokon, Ullash and Shaheb. Campus sources said the college authorities arranged the function in the afternoon and asked BCL activist Asaduzzaman Apple, also the convener of Rongdhanu Sangskritik Gosthi, to conduct the function. As Asad was conducting the function, BCL activists belonging to a faction led by Nilphamari district unit general secretary Naeem Islam Jibon raised slogans against Asad, also a supporter of their rival faction led by district unit president Deepok Chakraborty. They vandalised the venue, set fire to a banner and swooped on their rivals who also made a counter attack. During chase and counter chase between the two BCL groups, students, teachers and the invited guests were seen running helter-skelter. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, the college authorities held the function under police protection. No one was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Contacted, Principal Laila Arjumand Banu said the college authorities have taken stern action against the five students as they led the attack on the function. A four-member committee, headed by Vice-Principal Didarul Islam, has been formed to investigate the incident, the principal added. Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avert any further incident.
