Supporters of candidate beat man dead for not joining procession

Supporters of a chairman candidate in the upcoming union parishad election on Sunday afternoon beat a man dead as he refused to join their procession in favour of the candidate. The incident took place at Aknondobaria village under Moharajpur union in Sadar upazila of the district. The hapless man was identified as Naimul Haque, 55, of the same village. Police and locals said, some supporters of Abdus Salam, a chairman candidate of Moharajpur union, asked Naimul to take part in the procession that was going to file nomination papers in the morning. As Naimul refused to entertain their request, the angry supporters of Salam accused Naimul of non-cooperation after filling nomination at around 4:30pm. At on stage of altercation, they beat up Naimul mercilessly killing him on the spot. Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. Sohagi Begum, wife of Naimul, filed a murder case with Chapainawabganj Sadar police station accusing Abdus Salam and seven others. Away in Khagrachhari, 15 people filed nominations for chairman posts, 57 for member posts and 23 for women's reserved seats on Thursday for the upcoming election at three union parishads under Lakshmichhari upazila, reports our correspondent. According to district election office sources, two candidates submitted nominations for the post of chairman in Barmachhari union parishad, 10 for the posts of member and 5 for the posts of women's reserved seats. In Lakshmichhari union parishad, 10 candidates submitted nominations papers for the post of chairman, 25 for the posts of member and 11 for posts of women's reserved seats. In Dullatali union parishad, three candidates submitted nominations for the post of chairman, 22 for the posts of member and 7 for posts of women's reserved seats. Khagrachhari district election officer Md. Nurul Hassan said, May 15, 2011 has been fixed for the withdrawal of nomination papers while the election will be held on June 1, 2011.
