Robbers loot house of REB engineer in Manikganj

Robbers looted the house of a REB engineer in Manikganj yesterday while muggers took away money from Sylhet trader on Monday. In Manikganj, robbers looted cash, gold ornaments, and mobile set from the house of an engineer of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB) at Uchutia staff quarters early yesterday, reports our correspondent. Wearing mask, the armed gang numbering 10-12 entered the house of the engineer Nanna Mia by breaking open the door at around 2:00am. The robbers looted five tolas of gold ornaments, cash Tk.12,000, a mobile set and other goods from the house, the engineer said. The robbers then went to the house of neighbouring Rafiqul Islam, assistant general manager of the office. But they fled the scene when the neighbouring people woke up following a hue and cry. In Sylhet, muggers took away Tk 8.5 lakh from a trader in Haowapara area of the city Monday afternoon. Sources said trader Majharul Islam of Shaheb bazaar in Sadar upazila withdrew Tk 8.5 lakh from Dutch Bangla Bank branch in Barutkhana area of the city at around 4pm. When Majhar reached Haowapara while going to Ambarkhana by a rickshaw, a gang of six intercepted him and took away the money at gun point. In Panchagarh, five alleged robbers, while fleeing by a microbus with looted poultry birds, were arrested in Jogdal Charmile area under Sadar upazila early yesterday. The arrestees were identified as Aizza, 25, Shahirul, 25, Rubel, 27, Shaju, 30, and Profullo, 28. All of them hailed from Sadar upazila, reports our Thakurgaon Correspondent. Police said poultry traders Liton and Mithun were coming to the district headquarters from Tentulia upazila with the chickens by two rickshaw-vans late at night. A gang of robbers numbering 10/12 intercepted them at Jagda Charmile. At one stage, they tied up the hands and legs of the traders and looted the chickens at gunpoint. Later, hearing the hue and cry of the traders, locals seized the microbus and caught five of the gang members after a hot chase while others managed to flee.
