More union parishad election schedules

Elections to 38 union parishads in eight upazilas of Khagrachhari districts will be held from June 1 to July 2. As per schedules, voting will take place in three unions of Lakshmichhari upazila on June 1, five unions of Mohalchhari upazila on June 5, four unions of Manikchhari upazila on June 11, three unions of Ramgarh upazila on June 15, five unions of Dighinala upazila on June 19, five unions of Khagrachhari Sadar upazila on June 23, five unions of Panchhari upazila on June 27, and eight unions of Matiranga upazila on July 2, reports our correspondent The authorities concerned fixed May 5 and May 15 for submission and withdrawal of nomination papers for Lakshmichhari upazila, May 9 and May 19 for Mohalchhari upazila, May 14 and May 24 for Manikchhari upazila, May 17 and May 28 for Ramgarh upazila, May 21 and May 31 for Dighinala upazila, May 25 and June 4 for Khagrachhari Sadar upazila, May 29 and June 8 for Panchhari upazila, and June 7 and June 17 for Matiranga upazila. District Election Officer Mohammad Nurul Hassan said as many as 2, 96,000 voters in eight upazilas of the district are expected to cast their votes on the scheduled dates to elect chairmen and councillors of their respective union parishads. He further said necessary measures will be taken to hold free, fair and peaceful elections to 38 union pasrishads. Our Noakhali correspondent reported that pre-poll violence in Batoiya Union under Kabirhat upazila of the district left at least five people injured on Tuesday night. The injured are BNP activists Md Hanif Shah, 35, Mitu, 28, Faisal, 29, Mahbabul Alam, 30, and Faruk, 28. Of them, Md Hanif Shah was admitted to Noakhali General Hospital in a critical condition while the rest given first aid. BNP backed chairman candidate for Batoiya Union Parishad Golam Hayat alleged that Jubo League activists led by Mizan, Rahim, Imam Uddin, Yousuf and Azam attacked his supporters near Boalgopal in the union while they were returning home after electioneering at around 11:30pm.
