Criminals fell scores of fruit-bearing trees

Criminals felled scores of trees and damaged a number of others in two agriculture farms in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachhari hill district on Monday night. The affected farms are Cosmic Agro Farm covering about 200 acres of land at Toichakmapara and Globe Agro Farm covering about 100 acres of land at Chotabalchhari in the same upazila. Around a hundred criminals entered Cosmic Agro Farm at about 11:30pm of Monday, tied up the night guards and started cutting the trees, police and local sources said. "The gang tied us up at gunpoint and freed us before leaving the area. We could not identify any of them," Subal Candra Tripura, night guard of Cosmic Agro Farm, said. "The felled and damaged trees, numbering about eight thousand, including fruit bearing mango, litchi and jackfruit trees and those grown for timber," owner of Cosmic Agro Farm, Md Roman Haidar said over mobile. Mamunur Rashid, owner of Globe Agro Farm, about one kilometre away from Cosmic Agro Farm, told this correspondent over mobile that criminals felled and damaged about two thousand mango and litchi trees of his farm. Admitting damage to the two agro farms by criminals, Jahir Ahmad, assistant superintendent of police of Ramgarh Circle, said no case was filed as of 1:00pm yesterday.
