Six held in Gafargaon AL leader murder case

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested six people in Tongi Industrial area on Monday night for their alleged involvement in the killing of Awami League (AL) leader Mofazzal Hossain Sarwar in Gafargoan upazila on April 23. Sarwar was the joint convener of Datter Bazar Union AL and also a possible chairman candidate in the upcoming Union Parishad election, police said. The arrestees are Anwarul Haque, Rafiqul Islam, Nazrul Islam alias Samad, Abul Kashem, Manik and Sirajul Islam. They all are from Gafargoan, Rab sources said. Of the six, Anwarul Haque, Rafiqul Islam, Nazrul Islam alias Samad are FIR-named accused. The arrestees were taken to Rab-9 office here yesterday morning. After interrogation, they were handed over to Gafargoan police, Rab sources said. During interrogation, some of the arrestees said there had been a long-running feud between Mofazzal and them over land dispute and establishing supremacy in the area. Rab sources said. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gafargoan Police Station Md Omar Faruq yesterday told this correspondent that the arrestees would be produced in a Mymensingh court after police interrogation. Sarwar, 39, was shot dead by a gang in Mandil Bridge area in Gafargoan while returning home from Pagla Bazar at around 10:00pm on April 23. On April 4, five policemen of Gafargoan Police Station were suspended and closed to Mymensingh police lines for 'negligence' of duty. They are sub-inspectors Ashraf Uddin and Harun-or-Rashied, and assistant sub-inspectors Abul Kasem, Jamal Uddin and Mahmudul Hasan.
