Fire at seven jute godowns in 2 dists

Fire gutted four jute godowns in Narayanganj on Sunday and damaged goods in three others in Khulna yesterday. A devastating fire gutted four jute warehouses in Nitaiganj Tamakpatti area of Narayanganj town on Sunday morning. Eyewitnesses said, the fire originated following explosion of an electric transformer near the warehouse of Sharmin Jute Balers and soon engulfed the adjoining three warehouses of Universal Jute Balers and Tangail Jute Balers at 9am. On information, four fire fighting units of Mandolpara and Haziganj fire services rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control at noon after frantic efforts. The warehouse owners said a total of 1.5 lakh maunds of jute worth Tk 20 crore were gutted by the fire. In Khulna, fire broke out at three jute godowns at Maheshwarpasha under Daulatpur police station in the city yesterday noon, reports our staff correspondent. One of the godowns contained exportable jute goods worth Tk 5 crore while two others had exportables worth Tk 10 crore, sources said. Proprietor of Molla Jute Trading Sirajul Islam told this correspondent that the fire originated from an electric short circuit. But according to OC Shahabuddin Ahmed of Daulatpur PS, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet. At least 10 fire brigade units of Khulna city, Khalishpur, Daulatpur and Navy were trying to bring the flame under control till the time of filing this report yesterday evening.
