College teacher gets RI for torturing wife
A court here yesterday sentenced a government college teacher to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for torturing his wife.
Convict Humayun Kabir Jewel was an English teacher of Rajshahi New Government Degree College when the incident took place in September last year.
He was transferred to Sonagazi Government College in Feni following unrest in the city demanding his punishment.
Afzal Hossain, the first tribunal judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court in Rajshahi pronounced the verdict.
The court also fined Jewel Tk 1000, in default, to undergo another six months imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Jewel mercilessly beat up his wife Farhana Rubaiya Jhuma at their house in the city's Hoseniganj area on September 14 following her refusal to bring dowry of Tk 15 lakh.
Seriously injured Jhuma was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
She later lodged a case against Jewel with Rajpara police station on September 23, 2010.
Jhuma in her case alleged that Jewel had an extramarital affair with another girl. He was torturing her for several months in the name of dowry. On the day, he attempted to murder her , said Jhuma's lawyer Dil Sitara Begum Chuni.
