Several hundred students and locals in Saghata yesterday brought out a protest meeting demanding punishment to a stalker who abducted a schoolgirl in broad daylight. Saghata police said they have already sent stalker Abdur Rashid, 25, and three-wheeler driver Mukul Mia, 27, to Gaibandha court yesterday after filing a case. Police said they also rescued the victim and handed her over to parents. On Tuesday, Rumana Akhter, 14, a student of class ten at Barokona Multipurpose High School in Saghata upazila was waylaid by stalker Mukul Mia near Barokona bazaar. He forcibly picked her up in a CNG-run three-wheeler. As the victim raised a hue and cry local people chased the three-wheeler and caught it on the compound of driver Abdul Halim of village Pachierpur. Agitated people vandalised the three-wheeler and later set it afire. Meanwhile, a group of supporters of the driver attacked the locals with lethal weapons and injured 15 including teachers and students. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They also rescued the abducted schoolgirl from the house of driver Halim and arrested the stalker and driver from the spot. Protesting the incident local people, students and teachers of the school paraded the main roads in the town yesterday wielding sticks and demanding punishment to the stalker. Parents of the victim said Mukul Mia had been stalking their daughter on way to and from school for long. They complained to the guardians of the stalker but to no effect.
