Seven drug peddlers jailed in 2 districts
Mobile courts in Satkhira and Patuakhali districts sentenced seven drug peddlers to jail yesterday and on Sunday.
Five drug peddlers were sentenced to suffer simple imprisonment ranging from six months to one and a half years on charge of drug peddling at Bardal Bazar in Assassuni upazila and at Sabdalpur village in Kaliganj upazila yesterday, reports our Satkhira correspondent.
The convicts are Rokeya Begum, Jahangir Hossain Gazi, Shafiqul Islam Gazi and Rehena Parvin, of Assassuni upazila, and Kanchan Bala of Kaliganj upazila.
Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team yesterday raided the houses of Hakim Gazi and Shafiqul Islam Gazi at Bardal village and recovered 8 kg hemp from the houses.
They arrested Rokeya, Jahangir and Shafiqul from the spot. But sensing presence of Rab, the main drug peddler, Hakim Gazi, managed to escape.
Later, a mobile court led by Assssuni upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gias Uddin, also an executive magistrate, sentenced Rokeya to suffer six months' imprisonment and Jahangir and Shafiqul to one and a half years' imprisonment each.
A team of Narcotics Preventive Control Department led by Inspector Nasir Ujjaman of Kaliganj circle raided the house of Prashanta Das at Sabdalpur village and arrested Kanchan Bala and Rehena Parvin with 800 gram of hemp.
Kaliganj upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Toufiq E Elahi Chowdhury, also an executive magistrate, sentenced Kanchan Bala and Rehena to suffer six months' simple imprisonment each.
In Patuakhali, two drug peddlers were jailed by a mobile court on Sunday, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
The convicts are Shah Alam Sikder, 38, of Lebukhali village under Dumki upazila and Nilufar Begum, 45, of Sanirvar road in Patuakhali town.
Mobile court sources said, a Rab team arrested Shah Alam from Lukhali ferry ghat (terminal) at noon and seized one kg of hemp. Later, he was handed over to a mobile court that sentenced him to one year's rigorous imprisonment (RI).
A police team arrested Nilufar from Sanirvar road and seized 10 litres of locally-made wine from her possession. Later, a mobile court sentenced her to six months' RI.
