A bridge over Nurainpur River has remained useless three years after construction of the main structure due to lack of an approach road. Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) constructed the 150-metre-long and 5.85-metre-wide RCC girder bridge over Nurainpur River between Nurainpur and Bhoripasha villages under Baufal upazila in the district at a cost of Tk 4.51 crore. Construction work of the bridge connecting Nurainpur and Keshobpur unions of Baufal upazila completed on July 19 in 2008 but the approach road is yet to be built. "The government built the bridge spending crores of taka but we are not getting the benefit for want of an approach road," said Jainal Rari, 50, a local resident. Kamal Hossain, assistant engineer of LGED in Patuakhali, said, "Tk 94.88 lakh has been allocated to build approach road on both sides of the bridge but the land acquisition could not complete in time. 1.77 acres of land has already been acquired on Nurainpur side and process is on to acquire 3.06 acres of land on Keshobpur side. After completing the acquisition, we will start construction work of the approach road in a very short time."
