Police on Saturday arrested two accused in the case for barbaric torture on a 70-year-old man and his wife at Purbo Biralaxmi village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district. Victim Firoj Gazi, 70, of Purbo Biralaxmi village on Saturday evening filed a case with Shyamnagar police station against Arshad Ali, and his two sons Yasin Ali and Shamim of the same village on charge of torturing him and his wife Khodeza Khatun on Thursday. The complainant alleged that Arshad and his men on several occasions tortured him and threatened him with 'dire consequences' in a bid to grab his homestead. "On Thursday morning, a group of criminals led by Arshad Ali and his two sons Yasin Ali and Shamim went to forcibly take possession of my pond. As I tried to resist, the criminals assaulted me and tied me to a coconut tree, making me stand in the sun from 10:00am to 12 noon. The criminals also beat up my wife when she came to give me drinking water," he said. Later local union parishad member Rafiqul Islam rescued him from captivity. Firoz said he did not dare file a case against the criminals earlier in the face of threat by them. Contacted, Shyamnagar police station officer in charge Kazi Jalal Uddin said, "After hearing the barbaric incident, I sent a police officer to the area, brought victim Firoz Gazi to the police station and helped him to file a case. Police arrested two of the accused but the other criminal Shamim managed to escape".
