A Year into Journo Foteh Murder
Main accused still at large
Police could not make any headway in the killing of Sylhet journalist Foteh Osmani a year into his murder.
No chargesheet was submitted and the main accused remained at large.
Sylhet regional correspondent of Saptahik 2000 Foteh Osmani along with a friend on his motorbike, came under a sudden attack by armed criminals near the Doldoli tea garden, close to the Shahi Eidgah Road in the city on 18 April 2010.
The gang stabbed him severely and took away his wallet and other belongings.
Critically injured Foteh was first taken to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where from he was shifted to the capital city.
He succumbed to his injuries on 28 April midnight at a private hospital there.
Days after the killing, locals caught notorious criminal Saddam along with a motorbike and handed him over to the police. The other four arrestees are Sumon, Russel, Quashem and Swapon, all having criminal records in the area.
Among the arrestees, Quashem and Swapon gave confessional statement which was recorded by a judicial magistrate under Section 164.
They said that six people took part in the killing. Among them, Shah Alam still remained at large, police said.
Complainant of the case Al-Farhad Matin, also younger brother of the deceased, told this correspondent yesterday that they are uncertain about the fate of the case as the main killer is yet to be arrested.
"My old mother is still waiting to see the trial of the killers. The victim's widow and two daughters are passing hard days. They are now staying at a relative's house," he said.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case sub-inspector Abdur Rahim said, "We are trying our best to catch the principal accused. The chargesheet may be filed in a couple of weeks.”
