The miners of Maddyapara Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL) started work boycott for one hour a day yesterday to press the authorities to reinstate five of their sacked fellows. Mostafizur Rahman, general secretary of MGMCL Miners and Workers Union, also one of the sacked miners, said the boycott will continue till 28 April. The miners yesterday came to their workplaces at 10:00am instead of 9:00am, he added. From April 29, they would boycott for two hours to realise their demands. The month- long agitation programme was announced on April 8 at a press conference here. Five miners employed under Blue Star, an outsourcing company of MGMCL, lost their jobs for violating discipline on November 26 last year. The MGMCL and Blue Star jointly took action against the miners for allegedly assaulting a few officials on November 23. A case was also filed against them. The accused miners later got bail from high court. The miners also placed an 11-point demand to the MGMCL authorities. The demands include cancellation of manpower recruitment through outsourcing company, withdrawal of the case and restoration of the jobs of five miners and stern action against the corrupt officials of MGMCL.
