Hardrock miners stage sit-in
Miners of Maddhyapara Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL) in Parbotipur upazila staged a sit-in in front of the mine gate to press home their 11-point demand yesterday.
Reinstatement of retrenched workers, payment of 30pc risk allowance and extension of service age from 57 to 60 are among their demands.
The leaders of the workers' union threatened to go for tougher programme including one-hour work abstention for one week from today and two-hour from April 28 if their demands are not met within 12 hours.
On Nov 25, 2010 five workers were retrenched on charge of violating conditions and a case was filed against 25 workers, they said.
However, refuting the allegation, MD of the company Abul Bashar said contractor farm named Blu-Star retrenched the workers, not the mine authority.
