Robbers kill one, loot houses
Robbers killed a house owner in Gazipur and looted houses of expartriates and others in Sylhet and Satkhira on Tuesday.
A house owner was shot dead by a gang of robbers as he tried to resist them during a robbery in Muktarpur area under Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Haru-ur-Rashid Sadhon, 45, a wholesaler of grocery items at Seguntola Bazar.
Family members claimed that the robber somehow knew that Sadhon would go to Narsingdi with the amount to purchase items for his shop.
Police quoting family members said at around 2:00 am, a gang of 25-26 robbers entered the house of Sadhon,held the members of the family hostage at gun-point and looted cash Tk 6 lakh and 8 tolas of gold.
At one stage, the robbers shot Sadhon as he tried to resist the robbers, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police recovered the body yesterday morning and sent it to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In Sylhet, armed robbers looted 50 tolas of gold ornaments and over Tk 11 lakh from the houses of two expatriates in two upazilas on Tuesday, reports our staff correspondent.
Sources said, a gang numbering about 10, attacked the house of UK expatriate Suruj Miah at village Lama Hajrai of Dakshin Surma upazila at about 3 am.
They entered the house by cutting the grill of the verandah and hit on the head of Suruj with iron rod.
They then tied the other house members with ropes and looted 20 totals of gold ornaments and Tk 25,000
Suruj was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College hospital in the morning.
In the other incident, a gang of about 15 masked robbers looted the house of Qatar expatriate Md. Abdullah at village Chhatra Nagar under Kanaighat upazila.
The robbers entered the house by breaking open the collapsible gate and gave domestic help Qutub Uddin a good beating. They then beat up other members of the family mercilessly and confined them to a room. Later they took away Tk. 11 lakh, 30 tolas of gold ornaments and 5 mobile phone sets from the house.
In Satkhira, houses of two brothers, one of them newly elected union parishad (UP) member, were looted by robbers at village Tentulia in Tala upazila early Tuesday, reports our correspondent.
The gang beat up the members of the houses mercilessly before committing the robbery and decamped with the booties including cash Tk 7 lakh from the two houses.
Injured UP member Dr M Delwar Hossain was later admitted to a local clinic, police said.
Quoting locals police said, a gang of armed robbers numbering 15 to 20, raided the house of Delwar Hossain and his brother Abul Hossain at about 3-30 am.
They also looted 15 tolas gold ornaments, three mobile sets and other valuables from the houses.
