The three-day-long traditional Charak Puja of the Hindu community will start with enthusiasm and festivity at 'Bothor' village in Chatmohar upazila today. The festival begins every year on the 30th of Bangla month of Chaitra (Chaitra Sankranti) and ends with the celebration of Pahela Baishakh or Bangla New Year. According to Hindu myth, God Mohadeb once came under the 'Charak' tree to convey the massage of freedom of the Hindu community. Since then the Hindus started to perform Charak Puja. During the festival, the mythological tree is kept at the centre of the traditional puja. Once the lower caste Hindus used to perform the puja but now the whole community celebrates it. During the puja, devotees pour milk and sugar on Charak tree root and place wreath in a bid to satisfy the god. Hindus from different areas of the country and abroad visit the village to join the festival every year. Organisers said, several thousand devotees from Sri Lanka, Myanmar and India attend the festival every since 1947. They also join the traditional carnival organised by Bothor Shib Mondir. Convener of Charak Festival Celebration Committee Ashok Chakrabarti and secretary Kinkor Saha yesterday urged people to celebrate the festival peacefully.
