BNP men win half of Khulna UP seats
Pro-BNP candidates have won 33 out of 66 chairman seats in the recently held union parishad elections in nine upazilas of Khulna district.
Pro-AL men bagged 23 seats, pro-Jamaat men three while independent candidates won in seven UPs in the elections.
Elections in 39 unions under five upazilas of Khulna district were held on March 29 and that in 28 of 29 unions under four other upazilas of the district were held on April 3.
Election result of Garhuikhali union parishad under Paikgachha upazila has remained suspended as ballot boxes were snatched at the time of vote counting while election in Ghatbhog union under Rupsha upazila was postponed by a court order due to complications arising out of delimitation.
According to unofficial results received from sources of political parties, pro-BNP candidates bagged 20 seats of UP chairmen out of 39 UPs under five upazilas while pro-Awami League candidates won in 15 UPs, independent candidates in two and a pro-Jamaat man in one UP in elections held on March 29.
Pro-BNP candidates bagged 13 chairman seats out of 28 UPs under four upazilas while eight pro-AL men, two pro-Jamaat men and five independent candidates won in the elections held on April 3.
When contacted, Khulna District Election Officer Bibhore Kumar confirmed unofficial results in 66 out of 68 unions under all the nine upazilas of the district.
He, however, declined to comment on political affiliation of winners in the UP chairman posts.
