Over 150 hurt in post-poll clashes in 3 districts

Over one hundred and fifty people were injured in clashes between supporters of winning and losing candidates in union parishad (UP) elections in different areas of Khulna, Barisal and Patuakhali districts on Monday and yesterday. Post-poll violence in several unions under Rupsha and Dumuria upazilas of Khulna district left over a hundred of men, women and children injured, reports our staff correspondent. Thirty of them are still undergoing treatment at the different health complexes and clinics. One Sunday night, a group of attackers damaged the framed portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Awami League office at Srifaltala union under Rupsha upazila. They also looted valuables from around 20 houses of AL supporters on Monday and injured 19 people. A group of 25 miscreants stormed the houses of defeated AL Chairman candidate SM Habib and his election agent Maruf Ahmed and looted TV sets, money, gold ornaments, two bicycles and eight irrigation pumps from there, said police and eyewitnesses. Police said the attackers are supporters BNP candidate Monirul Hasan Bappi who has been elected chairman of Srifaltala UP under Rupsha upazila. On Monday, a group of people attacked the house of Baby Rahman of AL who has been elected member of Icegati union under Rupsha upazila. Three people including the member-elected were injured in this incident. At least 30 people including women and children were injured in separate incidents of post-poll violence in Dumuria upazila of Khulna district on Monday. Attackers also damaged and looted over a hundred houses. The injured are undergoing treatment at different clinics. Our Barisal correspondent reports: More than 20 people were injured in post-poll violence in Hizla and Mehendiganj upazilas on Monday. In Hizla, a group of armed people looted and ransacked the houses of Humayun Noli and Sultan Bepari at Charpattani village, said sources. Humayun and Sultan were election workers of chairman-elect Belayet Hossain Dhali, who had contested as a 'rebel' AL candidate. The attack led by Dipu Shikder, brother of the defeated chairman candidate of Guabaria union Talat Mahmud Nipu, left Humayun and his family members injured, sources said. The supporters of defeated member candidate Kaiyum Ali of Barojalia union of the same upazila attacked the supporters of member-elect Mamun Jamaddar. At least 13 people were injured when the attackers ransacked and looted five shops of the rivals. In Mehendiganj, municipality AL leader and panel mayor Nurul Huq Jamaddar was injured by the men of rivals led by Afsaruddin Rimon, also supporters of defeated chairman candidate Nizamuddin. Our Patuakhali correspondent adds: At least 30 people were injured in clashes among winning and defeated candidates in the UP polls in Patuakhali Sadar and Galachipa upazilas yesterday and on Monday night. Of them, 10 were admitted to Patuakhali General Hospital. Supporters of three defeated candidates Nurul Islam, Mojibur and Eunus Howlader in ward No-6 in Borobighai UP of Sadar upazila attacked supporters of winning candidate Nurul Haque Howlader, locals said.
