Hearing on charge framing against 57 mutineers starts

Hearing on charge framing against 57 mutineers of 2 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) began at the special court-13 in Dinajpur yesterday. The court headed by Col Saleh Ahmed started trial proceedings at 10:00am. At the beginning, Major Qureshi read out the charges brought against the accused. Two other members of the court are Lt Col Mahfuzur Rahman and Major Masud, reports our correspondent. Major Qureshi stated that the jawans revolted against their officers at the battalion headquarters on February 26 in 2009, looted firearms and ammunition from armoury and fired blank shots. After his statement, the court started hearing on charge framing against the accused. All the accused were produced in the court. Of them, four confessed to their involvement in the mutiny at the battalion and begged for mercy while the rest claimed innocence. Court sources said the hearing will continue until April 6. Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy was present. Our Khagrachhari correspondent adds: Arguments between the prosecution witnesses and 71 accused in the case for mutiny at 30 Battalion will be held at the special court-15 today. On completion of recording depositions of the witnesses, the court headed by Khagrachhari Sector Commander Col Abu Wahab Mohammad Hafizul Haque fixed the date. Two others member of the court are Lt Col Sayedis Sakline and Major AZM Golam Mostafa AL Mamun. Of the accused, 11 confessed to their involvement in the mutiny at the battalion headquarters on February 26 in 2009 and begged for mercy while the rest claimed innocence. Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmad and prosecutor Lt Col Md Zakir Hossain were present.
