Science and Rabindranath

In this column Dr. Ali Asgar's article titled "Scientific thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore" will be published in instalments, each having a separate heading- Editor, Science & Live Rabindranath was born in 1861 and lived up to 1941.Half of his life he thus spent in 19th century and the rest half in 20th century .In many respects this period was very important .Tagore's life coincided with the renaissance of Bengal in particular, and of India as a whole. The whole subcontinent was getting ready for independence with increased social consciousness, political awakening, expansion and modernization of education, Revolutionary change in Bengal language and Bengali literature of which a bright indication is Tagore's winning of Nobel prize in literature. The whole of this enlightenment and ardor can only be symbolized by calling it. a cultural revolution. Rabindranath was evolving in this climate of enthusiasm and fervor, and in fact he himself created much of this Cultural Revolution. The sense in which we will be using the word culture is more encompassing than the conventional limited meaning attributed to it.
