11 shops, house gutted in Chandpur fire incidents

At least 11 shops and a dwelling house were gutted in separate fire incidents in Sadar, Shaharasti and Haziganj upazilas here on Friday and Thursday. Local people said seven shops were gutted in a fire which broke out at Baghra bazaar in Sadar upazila on Friday. Fire service personnel rushed in and doused the flame after two hours of hectic efforts with the help of local people. Five people sustained burn injuries while extinguishing the blaze. The affected shop owners claimed that cash and valuables worth about Tk 35 lakh were gutted in the fire. In another incident, fire broke out at the girls' hostel at Aliganj Primary Teachers' Training Institute in Haziganj upazila headquarters on Friday. The fire originated from a gas cylinder at the kitchen of the hostel. On information, fire fighters from Haziganj and Kachua rushed in and extinguished the fire. Jesmin Begum, 22, a trainee of the institute sustained burn injuries. She was admitted to a local clinic. In yet another incident, four shops and a dwelling house were gutted in a fire which broke out at a market at Debkora village in Shaharasti upazila early Thursday.
