A tense situation was created in Tangail town yesterday as the district unit of ruling Awami League (AL) organised a rally and procession protesting Krishak Shramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddiqui's recent remark that Ziaur Rahman proclaimed the country's independence in 1971. At the programme on the premises of Shaheed Minar in the town, the leaders and activists of district AL and its associate organisations urged Tangail people as well as the administration to evict Kader Siddiqui from the district and send his two younger brothers to jail. Kader Siddiqui, also recipient of gallantry award Bir Uttam for his heroic role in the Liberation War, at a programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity on March 18 said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the Father of the Nation and architect of Bangladesh while Ziaur Rahman proclaimed the independence under the leadership of Bangabandhu. At yesterday's programme, the leaders and activists of district AL and its associate organisations urged Tangail people as well as the administration to evict Kader Siddiqui from the district and send his two younger brothers to jail. They also urged AL leader and Jute and Textile Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui (elder brother of Kader Siddiqui) not to favour his 'misguided' younger brothers. Among others, district AL Joint Secretary Faruque Ahmed, Jubo League central Organising Secretary Mamunur Rashid, city AL General Secretary and Tangail municipality Mayor Shahidur Rahman Mukti and district Jubo League General Secretary and Basail upazila parishad Chairman Kazi Olid Islam spoke at the rally. After the rally, they brought out a procession and tried to go to Kader Siddiqui's ancestral house at Akur Takur Para in the town but police and officials of district administration stopped them at Old Bus Stand area. The agitators returned to Shaheed Minar premises and demonstrated there. Earlier on March 19, Tangail district unit of AL declared Kader Siddiqui persona non grata in the district in protest against his 'unwanted remark' about the proclamation of independence. Following yesterday's agitation, a large number of police have been deployed in front of Kader Siddiqui's house and several important places in the town.
