17 get life for killing two

A court here yesterday awarded life imprisonment to 17, including six of a family, in a double murder case. The convicts are, Akbar Ali, Abdul Matin, Abdur Rahim, Ershad Ali, Samsad Biorai, Sadoi, Abdul Mannan, Zafar Ali, Habibul, Dudu miah, Abdul Malik, Khowaj Ali, Iliyas Miah, Azizul, Kalam and Ayes Ullah. Of them, Dudu Miah is at large while Azizul died during the trial. The Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-I acquitted eight other accused as charges brought against them could not be proved. Judge Md Nazir Ahmed also fined the convicts Tk 30,000 each, in default, they are suffer another month in jail. According to the prosecution, Abul Hossain of Bachhairpar village under Sylhet Sadar upazila picked up a quarrel with Sammsad of the village over grazing of cattle on a field on May 22 in 2001. Soon after, family members and supporters of the two equipped with lethal weapons locked in clash that left Abul Hossain and Fokhar Uddin dead on the spot and 20 others injured. Abul's nephew Mokbul filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station the following day accusing 24 people. After investigation, Sub-inspector Shawkat Hossain submitted a charge sheet to the court against 25 people on august 17 the same year. Thirteen out of 22 prosecution witnesses gave their deposition during the trial.
