44 mutineers jailed in Moulvibazar
Forty-four jawans of 14 battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were yesterday sentenced to jail terms ranging from four months to seven years for their involvement in mutiny at the battalion in Sreemongal of Moulvibazar district on February 26, 2009.
The special court-14, headed by Col SM Farhad, director of communication at BGB headquarter, pronounced the verdict in the mutiny case and also fined the convicts Tk 100 each.
Two other members of the court are Lt Col Md Akhtaruzzaman and Majo r Md saiful Wadud. Lt Col Md Nurul Huda, commander of the battalion, was the prosecutor.
According to the judgement, three jawans were jailed for seven years, seven for five years, two for four years, six for three years, two for two years and six months, seven for two years, five for one year and six months, four for one year, five for four months, one was jailed for six months, one for six years, and another for three years and six months.
Twenty-three of the convicts confessed to their involvement in the mutiny while the rest claimed innocence.
According to the prosecution, 45 jawans revolted against their officers at the battalion on February 26 in 2009, looted firearms and ammunition from armoury and opened blank shots.
They were arrested immediately after the incident and the complainant brought allegations against them. As one of the accused died in the jail, the court framed mutiny charges against 44 and punished them.
