47 hurt as AL factions clash at Cox's Bazat

At least 47 people were injured as two faction of Awami League Cox's Bazar municipality unit clashed after laying wreaths at Central Shaheed Minar in the town on the occasion of the Independence Day after midnight on Friday. The feuding groups opened fire and hurled brickbats at each other during the clash. Police arrested Chhatra League leader Ishtiaque Ahmed Joy and AL leader Zahirul Islam Kajal on charges of opening fire during the clash. Six rounds of gun shots were fired during the clash, police said. A case was filed with Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station against 28 AL and BCL men, including the two arrestees, under Speedy Trial Act yesterday afternoon. The two groupsone led by AL municipality unit President Mujibur Rahman and the other by Ashok Barua--damaged a restaurant, five microbuses and several auto-rickshaws on the main road of the town during clash. Police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control at around 2:00am. Leaders of the two groups blamed each other for the incident. Mohammad Shahjahan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said the clash was a sequel to a conflict that surfaced in the AL unit over Cox's Bazar municipal election in January this year.
