Pre-UP Election Clashes
22 injured in Bagerhat, 8 in Patuakhali
At least 30 people were injured as supporters of rival candidates in union parishad (UP) election clashed in Bagerhat and Patuakhali on Monday.
Twenty-two people were injured in clashes between two groups of supporters at Talbunia of Rampal upazila and Tafalbari Bazar of Sharankhola upazila in Bagerhat.
In Bashtali union, supporters of chairman aspirants Maulana Rezaul Karim and Sheikh Abu Sayeed engaged in a clash during election campaign on Monday evening.
Later, the two groups equipped with sticks and brick chips attacked each other, leaving 12 people injured, reports UNB.
Of the seriously injured, Alauddin, Saidul Islam, Badsha Alam, Selim, Kutubuddin and three others were admitted to Jhanjhania Hospital.
In Southkhali union, supporters of chairman candidates Anowar and Mozmmel Hossain clashed during the election campaign, leaving 10 people injured from both sides.
Of the seriously injured, Rubel Khan, Nasir, Rubel Haulader, Muhim Haulader and Zakir Mir were admitted to Sharankhola Hospital.
In Patuakhali, at least eight people were injured as supporters of rival candidates locked in clashes at Noyabhangoni village under Galachipa upazila at about 8:00 pm on Monday.
The injured are Bashir Uddin, 30, Mizanur Rahman, 30, Nannu Mia, 40, Farida Begum, 30, Begum, 40, Shahida Begum, 40, Kona, 12 and Ripa, 8,--all hailing from Fultala village under the upazila.
They were admitted to Galachipa health complex.
Police and locals said, some supporters of Mostain Rahman alias Linkon, chairman candidate of Chotobaishdia union were going to Linkon's house at Kawkhali village by two Tomtoms (mechanised van).
When they reached Nayabhanhune village, a gang of 40/45 led by Juboraj, 25, Juran, 30, and Rawsan Ali, 26,-- all supporters of Abdul Mannan Howlader, rival chairman candidate-- attacked them. As they raised a hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and the attackers left the scene.
Mannan Howlader, however refuted the allegation saying none of his supporters were involved in attack.
