Deaths of 3 kids in road mishaps trigger protests

Deaths of two boys and a girl in road accidents yesterday and the day before in Nilphamari, Panchagarh and Habiganj districts triggered protests. Locals and students blocked roads in all the places demanding punishment to the culprits. Traffic movement on Nilphamari-Domar road came to a halt for three hours due to road blockade following death of a student in an accident in Domar upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Sohanur Rahman Sohan, a class IX student of Domar High School and son of Rezaul Islam of Basatpara Chikanmati village in the upazila, reports UNB. Police said Sohan became unconscious after being hit by a sack thrown from the roof of a bus at Chikanmari crossing. The minibus halted in the area for unloading dry fish sack. The boy met the accident while he was passing by the area. Sohan was admitted to Boragari Health Complex and later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died yesterday. Hearing the death news, locals put up barricade on Nilphamari-Domar road disrupting traffic movement for three hours. In another accident, a student of class-VI at Panchagarh Bishnu Prashad (BP) Government Boys'High School was killed on Monday evening on Panchagarh-Tentulia road in front of Panchagarh Shishu Paribar in the town. Police and locals said, Latus Islam, 12, son of late Nazrul Islam of Shikarpur village under Boda upazila, also a member of Panchagarh Shishu Paribar, was killed in a road accident when a Tentulia-bound truck hit him from behind at about 7:00pm. After his death, locals and his fellows of the Shishu Paribar blocked the road for an hour demanding punishment of the killer, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent. The next morning, students of the boys' school barricaded the Panchagarh-Dhaka highway in front of their school for about an hour. They brought out an angry procession and paraded different streets of the town. Later the students submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner demanding punishment of the killer. In Habiganj, locals and students put up barricade on the Dhakla-Sylhet highway on Monday noon after a schoolgirl was killed in a road accident in Nabiganj upazila. Police and locals said, Yasmin, 7 and Rima Begum, 7, both class one students of Minajpur Government Primary School were returning home from their school. They sustained serious injuries as a speedy microbus hit them while they were crossing the road. Yasmin was declared dead at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the other was hospitalised. As the death news spread, agitated locals and school children blocked the road for over an hour.
