Charges against 21 mutineers framed in Chapainawabganj

The special court-12 yesterday framed charges against 21 jawans of 39 Battalion under Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) for their involvement in the mutiny at the battalion headquarters in Chapainawabganj on February 26, 2009. Prosecutor Lt Col Abu Bakar Abu, also the commanding officer of the battalion, read out the allegations against the rebels and appealed to the court to frame charges against them. He told the court that the jawans revolted against their officers, looted firearms from armoury and fired blank shots. After hearing, the court headed by Rajshahi Sector Commander Col Ehia Azam khan framed charges against the accused. Two other members of the court are Lt Col Khalid Hossain and Lt Commander (BN) Touhidul Islam. The accused are Subedar Md Mostofa Mia, havilders Benoar Rahman and Ruhul Amin, nayeks Eskendar Ali and Rahmat Ali, lance nayeks Shafiqur Rahman and Taus Mia, sepoys Mojibur Rahman, Zahangir Alam, Abdul Wazed Pramanik, Abdur Rahim, Syed Monirul Islam, Abul Bashar, Rony Ahmed, Zahidul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Jamal Mia, Panchanan Das, Moshfiqur Rahman, Muhammad Ruhul Amin Shikdar and driver Abdul Mannan. Of them, 15 confessed to their involvement in the mutiny and begged for mercy while the rest claimed innocence. After framing charges against the accused, the court recorded statements of four prosecution witnesses in the mutiny case and adjourned trial proceedings until 9:00am today. On October 30 last year, Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Kamal Mia, brought mutiny charges against 21 jawans of the battalion. Deputy Attorney General Shasanko Shekhar Sarkar, special public prosecutors advocate Mokhlesur Rahman and advocate Rafiqul Islam were present at the special court. The jawans were arrested following a case filed by then officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Ahsanl Haque with the Chief Judicial Magistrate' Court on May 18, 2009. They were immediately arrested and produced in the court that sent them to jail.
