7 mayor candidates lose security deposit in B'baria

Seven out of ten mayoral candidates have lost their security deposit for failing to get one-eighth of the total votes cast in the election to Brahmanbaria municipality on March 13. They are Jatiya Party (JP) backed candidate Nazmul Haque, rebel Awami League (AL) candidate Ashiqul Alam Bablu, independent candidates Atiqur Rahman, Shah Amirul Islam Minto, Sayed Nurul Alam, Abedul Huda, and district AL Secretary advocate Humayun Kabir's wife Nayar kabir. AL backed candidate Md Helal Uddin won the election, defeating his nearest rival Md Hafizur Rahman Molla of BNP. Helal secured 26,207 votes while Molla got 21,682 votes. Rebel AL candidate Mahmudul Haque bagged 10,350 votes. As per Election Commission law, if a candidate fails to get one-eighth of the total votes cast in the election, he or she will lose security deposit. According to district election office sources, Nazmul Haque got 168 votes, Ashiqul Alam Bablu 71 votes, Atiqur Rahman 280 votes, Shah Amirul Islam Minto 163 votes, Sayed Nurul Alam 276 votes, Abedul Huda 387 votes and Nayar kabir 147 votes.
