Bus owners stage sit-in, traders observe strike
Khulna Bus Owners Association staged a sit-in on Khulna-Jessore highway near Phultala Bazar from 10:00am to 12:00 noon yesterday protesting murder of businessman Jinnah Bhuiyan, also a member of the association.
Besides, traders and shop owners in Phultala upazila yesterday observed a half-day hartal protesting murder of Jinnah.
Later, members of both Bus Owners Association and Phultala Traders' Association submitted a memorandum to UNO Md Shahidul Islam demanding immediate arrest of the killers.
Khulna District Bus Owners Association yesterday gave a 72-hour ultimatum to arrest the killers of Jinnah. Otherwise, they threatened to enforce an indefinite transport strike on all routes of the south-western region.
Munna Bhuiyan, younger brother of slain businessman Jinnah Bhuiyan lodged a case with Phultala Police Station at 9:45pm on Wednesday, naming none as accused of killing his elder brother.
Jinnah was killed in an armed attack by unidentified miscreants at 10:30 pm on Tuesday near his residence at Damodar village under Phultala upazila.
As Zinnah, his son Rifat, and staff Shekhar were returning home, the criminals waylaid them and shot the businessman and left the scene.
Rifat and Shekhar, who escaped unhurt, rushed Zinnah to Phultala Upazila Health Complex. The victim died while being shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Sub-Inspector Mukto Roy Chowdhury, investigation officer (IO) of the case, told this correspondent that complainant had not accused anyone in the case statement.
When asked, neither the complainant nor wife of slain businessman wanted to comment on the incident. “Let police arrest the culprits and unearth the motive behind the killing,” said Rehana Parvin, wife of slain businessman Jinnah Bhuiyan.
