3 JMB men jailed for Narail serial blast

Three militants belonging to Islamist outfit Jamaat-e-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were sentenced to jail yesterday in the case for serial bomb blast on August 17 in 2005 at four spots of Narail town. Md. Sikandar Ali, Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal, Khulna delivered the judgment in the afternoon. According to court sources, JMB militant Saifuzzaman Probal was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer three more years in jail. The court also convicted JMB militants Ruhul Quddus and Hafez Mahmud alias Rakib Hasan and sentenced each of them to 14 years RI each and fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer more two years in jail. Four other accused acquitted of charges are Ziaur Rahman, Abdul Aziz Shikder, Syed Arafat and Mamun Gazi. SI Jahangir Alam of Narail Sadar police station filed the case as complainant on August 18 in 2005 naming seven people as accused of exploding bombs one after another on the previous day at four different spots of the town. OC Md Ishaque Dukhu Mia of Narail Sadar police station investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet to court on November 9 in 2006. The case was, however, transferred to Khulna Speedy Trial Tribunal on September 26 last year. The court recorded statements of 29 out of 43 prosecution witnesses during trial.
