The great quake
Expected wave heights for the tsunami generated by a magnitude-8.9 earthquake in Japan on March 11 are shown in these data from a computer simulation by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric dministration. The wave decreases in height as it travels across the Pacific Ocean but then gets higher as it hits shallower areas near coasts.
