A tiger was beaten to death by villagers at Golakhali in Shyamnagar upazila of the district early yesterday. Around midnight Friday the tiger entered Golakhali village across Momundo river from the Sundarbans, villagers said. It killed a goat there. Hearing dog's barking, locals gathered to find out the tiger. Receiving information, the Koikhali forest officials and a local vigilance team came to the place, said Taufiqul Islam, assistant conservator of forest, Satkhira range. They tried to catch the tiger with a tranquiliser gun and fired at least 50 to 60 shots. At about 4:30am, the tiger attacked Nazrul Islam, 35, son of Pagol Sardar of the village. Locals rescued the man and beat the hapless animal dead. The forest officials recovered the tiger's body from the spot and took it to the forest office on a boat. Later it was taken to Kalagachhia forest office and buried there after a post mortem, said officials. Injured Nazrul was admitted to Shyamnagar upazila health complex.
