Lentil Hoarding in Bogra

Case against BNP leader Shokrana, 3 others withdrawn

Our Correspondent, Bogra
The hoarding case filed against four people in Bogra on February 12, 2007 has been withdrawn, terming it as 'aimed to harass', although the main accused, Bogra BNP leader Shokrana, did not appeal for its withdrawal. Bogra Sadar police station sub-inspector (SI) Md Ataur Rahman on February 12, 2007 filed the case with Bogra Sadar police station against BNP leader Shokrana, businessman Parimal Singh and City Bank Bogra branch officers Kazi Kamal Uddin Ahmed and Md Mohibul Rahman under 1974 Special Powers Act accusing them of hoarding 52,028 sacks of lentil. Confirming withdrawal of the case, Assistant Public Prosecutor advocate Naresh Mukherjee said, "As the two accused bank officials in an appeal to the home ministry claimed innocence and prayed for their exemption, the home ministry on April 15 last year ordered withdrawal of their names from the case." Although the No 1 accused in the case Shokrana did not make any such appeal, Bogra Public Prosecutor (PP) advocate Abdul Matin made an appeal to the judge of the Special Tribunal 2 on September 29 last year to withdraw the case. Consequently, the judge recently ordered withdrawal of the case, and so, Shokrana, accused No 1, and Parimal Singh, accused No 2, have also been exempted. The investigation officer of the case GG Biswas on March 15, 2007 pressed charge sheet against the accused but before framing of the charge accused Parimal Singh filed a writ petition with the High Court which stayed the proceedings of the case. The writ petition was withdrawn following the decision to withdraw the case, sources said.
