Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Bangladesh Krishak League (BKL) foiled a human chain formed by Grameen Bank staff in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj district yesterday morning. Hafizur Rahman, manager of Grameen Bank district branch, told our correspondent that they organised the human chain programme at upazila headquarters at around 11:00am protesting removal of Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus from the bank's managing director (MD) post. He alleged that a group of people led by Babul Ahmed, president of Krishak League Pakundia unit, and Shafiqul Islam, president of BCL upazila unit, swooped on the participants at 11:30am, snatched banners and festoons and set them afire. Mozzammel Hossain, officer-in-charge of Pakundia Police Station, confirmed the incident. Protesting Prof Yunus' removal from the post of MD of Grameen Bank, staffs of the bank, borrowers, as well as general people also formed human chains and held rallies and processions in other districts across the country yesterday, according to our correspondents. Meanwhile , protest programmes were held is several districts yesterday. In Pabna, human chains were formed in front of the seven area offices of the bank in the morning. Several hundred people including staff and depositors of Grameen Bank (GB) joined the programmes. Addressing the rallies at the venues, speakers strongly protested removal of Prof Yunus from the post of managing director of Grameen Bank. "Prof Yunus, a pioneer of micro-credit and founder of Grameen Bank, was conferred the Nobel Prize for his contribution to the rural population of the country, they said. The speakers demanded respectful reinstatement of Prof Yunus as the MD of Grameen Bank. In Panchagar, over 200 GB staff brought out a procession atTentulia upazila headquarters and then formed a human chain in front of their office. They also submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) demanding reinstatement of Prof Yunus as the managing director of the bank, reports UNB. Protesting the same, over 500 employees and borrowers of Grameen Bank formed a human chain in front of Noakhali Press Club yesterday morning. They demanded reinstatement of Prof Yunus as the managing director of the bank.
