6 Rangpur BCL men arrested, sent to jail

Infighting leaves five hurt at CU

Six leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Rangpur Medical College and Rangpur Government College units, arrested on charge of ransacking traffic police office in the town on Tuesday night, were sent to jail yesterday. The BCL leaders are Ashraful Haque, president of Rangpur Medical College unit, Sanjoy Sarker and Rezwanur Rahman, secretary and organising secretary of the unit, and Rangpur Government College unit members Shafiur Rahman, Yunus Ali and Ahsan Habib, reports our correspondent. Police yesterday produced them in a court that sent them to jail. Hearing on their bail petition will be held today, court sources said. During a drive on Tuesday, traffic police seized four unlicensed motorbikes of BCL leaders at DC point in the town and took them to traffic police office. At around 7:30pm the six BCL men went to the office and asked a sergeant to return their motorbikes. As the sergeant refused to do so, the BCL men became furious and ransacked furniture and office files. On information, law enforcers from Kotwali Police Station rushed to the spot and arrested the BCL men. Our CU correspondent reported that two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chiitagong University (CU) unit clashed on the campus yesterday, leaving five from both sides injured. The injured are Amit Chakraborty of philosophy department, Sayeed of mathematics department, Imran of botany department, Farazi of history department and Nazim of physics department. Activists belonging to the two groups locked in a clash at university railway station over taking control of the campus. Of the injured, Amit was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical conditions while the rest given first aid at CU medical centre, campus sources said. Police raided Shahjalal Hall of the university yesterday afternoon and arrested ten students. During the raid, law enforcers also found seven billhooks in a sack in front of the hall, said inspector Mizanur Rahman of university police outpost. Additional police have been deployed on the campus to avert any further clash.
