Employees of Roads & Highways Department (RHD) observed mass hunger strike in several districts yesterday to press their 6-point demand, including regularisation of jobs. In Jessore, a rally was held before mass hunger strike at Dorratana Bhairab intersection. It was addressed by Jessore circle RHD workers` and employees leaders. Speakers urged the government to regularise jobs of all employees, including work-charged employees who have been working at the RHD for a long time. They pointed out that 7,206 work-charged employees were working at the RHD for years but their jobs are yet to made permanent despite repeated requests made by the leaders of temporary workers of RHD to the authority. They demanded immediate steps to regularise jobs of temporary workers, removing all anomalies. The other demands include introducing pension immediately, promotion of third and fourth-class employees, providing time-scale and selection grade. RHD Jessore circle workers` leader Selim Sikder, general secretary Shariful Islam, Tajul Islam, organising secretary Siddikur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman, Magura district RHD workers` leader Zakaria Mia, Kushtia RHD workers` leader Mokhlesur Rahman, Narail RHD workers` leader Shah Alam Khokon, Khalilur Rahman, Mohabbat Hussain and Maqbul Hussain spoke. Bangladesh Roads and Highways Labourers and Employees Union Moulavibazar and Habiganj branches held similar mass hunger strike and rally at Moulavibazar Press Club premises. The programme started at 10:00am and continued till 5:00pm, reports our correspondent. All the 175 work-charged employees of Patuakhali and Barguna district RHD observed their mass hunger strike in front of Patuakhali RHD office. They observed the programme as part of the central movement of all 7,206 work-charged employees across the country, reports our Patuakhali correspondent. During the hunger strike a street corner meeting was also held at the venue. Similar reports were received from several other districts yesterday.
