Houses, shanties, shops gutted

At least 27 houses, 25 shanties and 4 shops were gutted in fire incidents in Cox's Bazar, Narayanganj and Dinajpur on Saturday and Thursday. Sixteen houses and four shops were gutted in a devastating fire at Banikpara village in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar on Saturday. Witnesses said, the fire originated from the kitchen of a house late at night and soon engulfed the adjacent houses and shops. Locals brought the fire under control after three hours of frantic efforts, reports UNB. The affected house and shop owners claimed that cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth about Tk 2 crore were gutted in the blaze. In Dinajpur, at least 11 houses of a housing project in Birganj upazila were burnt to ashes on Thursday night. The fire originated from the kitchen of Jagdish Chandra Roy, of Arjunahar housing project at Shatogram village and soon engulfed the adjacent houses. Property worth Tk 5 lakh were damaged in the fire incident, the house owners said. In Narayanganj, at least 25 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out in Shantinibash area of Fatulla under Sadar upazila on Thursday. Most of the affected family members are garment workers, reports our correspondent. Police and local sources said, the fire originated from a gas oven at a kitchen of the shanties and soon engulfed the area. The affected families claimed losses of goods and other valuables worth Tk 8 lakh.
